For lot’s of people the Halloween – to be stylish – is like a red rag to a bull. Because this is a feast from the USA, a foreign tradition, and why should we take over american stuff. Contrary to this, I think there is no problem with this holiday. Nay!
In one hand it is not from the USA it is a holiday with European roots. So there is nothing in it from the devil. And so on it is fun! If something is funny it can be also respectful. We don’t have to take everything very serious. 😉
The kids especially like the Halloween madness. It’s cool to carve a pumpkin with mom and dad, dress up, scare each other, eat sweets, go to partys, collect many good memories. I’m glad that the children of nowadays don’t have to face only with the sad cemetery visits. Also for us, the parents, it is easier to pass the message of death, cemetery, saints etc. Because this is basically not an easy topic… Of course we go to the cemetery, this is a good opportunity to meet with the wider family too. So I think these two types of celebration can work next to each other. At least in our family it works.
Then the other non-saint thing why I’m glad that the Halloween has more and more important cult here: the PUMPKIN! I adore it! It’s great to carve it. And it’s also great to eat it. Now Milos is old enough to enjoy the carving, so this year was the first time when we made the jackolantern with his assistance. And the food, made of pumpkin… the thought itself is mouthwatering. Let’s start with my favourite: the pumpkin soup. I make it with nutmeg and a pinch of ginger. Tutti! Then the baked pumpkin: eat the plain pumpkin or if it’s not sweet enough, with a little honey. I have never baked, but I have tasted pumpkin cookies with nuts, and dry fruits. I would never thought that it so delicious. I could continue the list forever. I always find a great pumpkin recipe I must try, after I wrote it into my great recipe book ;).
Not to forget the Halloween decoration. I like it very much too. Now when weather is not so good, we spend more time in the house. It is a good idea to „redress it up” to not get bored a home.
