I entered into adolescence when women started to be under tremendous pressure to be a Photoshop picture of a supermodel here in Hungary as well. There were perfect Venuses posing everywhere on the suddenly more and more common billboards and magazine pages and as a young teenager I truly believed that it is possible to look that gorgeous, you only need to pursue it hard enough.
During my first beauty salon treatment I was constantly thinking that now I am about to become a glamour cover girl and it was quite a disappointment that I actually did not. And it was similarly very unsettling that weighting 50 kg (110 lb) still does not mean that my legs would look like that of the model on the anti-cellulite cream ad. It was quite a relief when I read a half sentence in a Cindy Crawford interview: „I hope that nobody believes that I look like this in the morning when I get up?!” And a long paragraph followed listing who is working on her beauty and how and then who is working on the spotless look of her photos, indeed on the simulacrum of her beauty. This was an invigorating relief for my confidence as a woman and I also started to analyze photos with a more critical eye generally. For a while I was thinking that this whole stylist and post-production thing is just a legerdemain. But later I had to realize and actually learn it the hard way that our visual stimulus-threshold is pushed up so much by the quality visual materials bombarding us daily that it is actually impossible to make oneself visible without „produced” pictures. Which is quiet a bad news for a person who intends to make a living from creating products featuring her paintings. You can not sell visuality with poor visuality…. So I started experimenting, came up with a little bit more exciting product photos and even though I got some encouragements and praises I knew I have neither the talent nor the patience for this. However, the latter is especially needed beside the professional knowledge and talent, just as it is a necessity to most professional fields. Experimenting with lights, different set-ups, view angles and backgrounds, textures and whatsoever, it takes a lot of time and patience. What I often do not have, I must admit. So I started to long for a professional photographer who would pursue to the utmost all possible atmospheres with my products for what I have neither the time nor the patience. Of course I knew that it is an expensive toy to have so I only thought about it just in that very silent way.
Later I met Panka and her food-photos and I thought that someone who can make such an amazing photo of a chocolate roll could probably start something with my stuff too, something completely original. Months had passed before I had the courage to approach her. By that time I had already recommended her to the print shop that issued our 16 month calendar and alongside of this loose thread I threw in that „if she might find some fantasy in photographing my products…” And she did not reject. She picked up immediately that one of my strengths is the colors and so she designed a couple of compositions playing up the colors of my paintings with a seasonal concept, emanating an autumn feeling. The result was so lively and so real and so much like me that my heart jumped. Here they are, the Autumn ones but there will be the Winter and Christmas ones too.
