We are having our breakfast at our amazing hotel at the seaside. This is our third day here. The weather is nice, the water is perfect, everybody is very kind, our window looks to the sea- we are satisfied. We naively ask our son how does he feel like here. Which holiday is better, this one or the other one at Balaton? The answer comes immediately: BALATON! After the first shock I realised that not Balaton itself has the biggest charm for him but Máté, his new little friend who is a one-year older „big boy”,. But at the same time I started to think of this abroad vs. Balaton stuff. And I realised that discovering the world, travelling here and there is amazing, but at the same time we have Balaton. If I think of it lots of experiences come to my mind…
As far back in my childhood it was great when we travelled to the mindblowing corporate hotel. With the measurement of that time (especially from the countryside) the „cake hotel” (the name was given by us by the shape of the building, I am still curious if anyone else called it like this?) of the Nuclear Power Station of Paks was luxurious. I cleary remember when we had the luck to encounter the 2-3 pieces of Comodor64 computers. We were standing in the row with the other kids to play on them. You can imagine how fabulous it was at that time!
Then my uncle had a great part in collecting Balaton experiences. He only married with women who had a summer house at Balaton. He carefully took care of not to go to the same place all the time: his first wife had a house at the North side, the second one at the South. There was a difference between the two sides but the most important things were the same: lángos, hekk (fried fish) and pickles. I don’t know how was it in your town but at Paks bakery for lángos didn’t exist, so the fattiest lángos seemed to us a yummy titbit (and we were still far-far away from the cheesy-creamy era). So every year we were waiting for the Balaton holiday and our yearly lángos portion. With twisted ice-creaaaam!
Balaton is still topping in this year! I visited it three times during different type of holidays. We had the family holiday, than the mini vacation when Tamás swam through the lake. Not to mention the bike tour with the girls. Finally, finally Évás was at home so we got our stuff and bikes and we were just riding for 3 days. OK that’s not the whole truth we were not just riding but drinking fruch, eating hekk, talking and laughing. everything „must” at a Balaton trip. I really enjoyed it!
Balaton is a great place! Maybe it can be the effect of the thousands of memories and great experiences, buti it has never been a delusion. My son is right, Balaton for us means more than the Riviera.
